The folklore behind the courting candle is that the suitor could only "court" the lady until the candle burned down to the base. It could be set high if the parents approved of the suitor so he could stay a long time or it could be set low to only give a short time for the visit.

This wrought iron courting candle is quite heavy and measures 9 1/2" tall by 5" wide.
